Category : How to

If you have some flac files and want to convert them to mp3 on mac os x, just follow the following instructions.

First you will need iTunes and a software called xACT which can be downloaded here.

After downloading and installing xACT you are to start. Basically there are two main parts: I) Converting flac to wav; and II) Converting wav to mp3. There is also an optional part III) that we will briefly describe, which uses a software to insert the tags into the mp3.

Part I – Converting flac to wav

1. First of all, open xACT

2. Go to Decode tab

3. Click on Add and select the flac files you want to convert. When you select all the files you want, click on Add Files.

4. At this point, you will see the list of selected files and a few options. Set the output format as WAV and Click on Decode.

5. You’ll be asked to choose a location to save the output files. Select the folder you want (I recommend the same folder where the .flac files are) and then click Choose.

6. Now just wait for the decoding. It may take a few minutes. Once it’s done, go to the Part II.

Part II – Converting WAV to MP3

1. Open iTunes

2. Now, let’s setup the mp3 output Click on iTunes menu and select Preferences.

3. In the general tab, go to Import Settings

4. In the Import Using list, select MP3 Enconder and in the Setting list, select Higher Quality (you can also create custom settings if you are an advanced user). Click on OK.

5. At this point, you are ready to start converting your files. So, go to menu File and click on Add to Library

6. Navigate to the folder you saved the .wav files created by xACT, select that folder, and then click on Choose

7. Now, iTunes will import all .wav files you have selected. Go to Recently Added Playlist (there are other ways, but this is probably the easiest to find all files you want) and select the files you that just added.

8. Once you have all .wav files highlighted, right-click on any of the selected songs and click Create MP3 Version.

9. Now just wait while iTunes convert your files. Once it is done, you can delete your old wav files. Your new MP3 files will be located at Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/

(Optional) Part III – Adjusting your MP3 tags

The easiest way to do this is using a software that reads your files and creates the tags for you. In my opinion, the best option is Jaikoz. Unfortunately it is a paid software (£15), but worth :)
